Hail CoRvid, The Great Decoder
The virus that made us say, "Ohhh, NOW I get it!" (CoRvid is the most common mispronunciation I’ve heard of the acronym for Coronavirus-19. Poor corvids.)
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” ~ Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities
These words baffled me in high school. I mean, opposites can’t be simultaneously true, right? Back then, I thought, this guy’s contradicting himself, he’s obviously confused, and this book is boring.
But COVID-19 has decoded what he was trying to say. At any given moment across the globe, humans are having completely different, often opposite, experiences during this pandemic. And very often, emotions arise that we didn’t expect the experience to provoke. This has always been the case, of course. But for some, this unprecedented situation is what it took to become aware of this truth.
As I began interviewing folks for Covidly Yours, this fact – of opposites being simultaneously true – became abundantly clear.
Covidly Yours will run the gamut, and my hunch is, it will eventually depict a Tale of Two Viruses: It was the time of orgasm, it was the time of sexual dysfunction, it was the epoch of deprivation, it was the epoch of abundance, it was the season of solitude, it was the season of community, it was the winter of sickness, it was the spring of healing, it was the year of expansion, it was the year of contraction, it was the waxing of justice, it was the waxing of injustice, it was the agent of unification, it was the agent of separation….….
I invite you to subscribe. I’m talking with an intriguing line-up of folks for this sex-positive, inclusive and broad-minded inquiry project. And it definitely hasn’t been boring.
